Surah Al Waqiah With English Translation

Surah Al-Waqi’ah is the 56th chapter of the Qur’an, consisting of 96 verses. It is also known as “The Event” or “The Inevitable,” referring to the Day of Judgment.

The Surah vividly describes the coming of this event, when all people will be divided into three groups: the foremost (those closest to God), the people of the right (the righteous), and the people of the left (the wicked). Each group will face different fates, with rewards of eternal bliss in Paradise for the righteous and severe punishment for the disbelievers.

Surah Al Waqiah emphasizes the certainty of the Resurrection and urges people to reflect on the signs of God’s creation, the temporary nature of worldly life, and the importance of preparing for the afterlife. Recitation of this Surah is often associated with seeking protection from poverty.

Allah’s Name to commence with, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

When that which is meant to occur will occur.

At that time there will be no room for anyone to deny its occurrence.

(It will be) degrading some and elevating some.

When the earth will tremble by trembling.

And the mountains will disintegrate into dust.

So, they will become like fine scattered dust particles in filtered light.

And you will become of three categories.

So, (firstly) those who are on the right; how (fortunate) are those who are on the right (i.e. the people of Paradise).

And (secondly) those who are on the left; how (unfortunate) are those who are on the left (i.e. the people of Hell).

And (thirdly) those who surpassed (by entering Paradise due to their pious deeds); they absolutely did surpass (to enter it).

It is they who are nearest to the Majestic Court (of Allah).

They are in Gardens of Bliss.

A (large) group from the earlier generations (of Muslims will be in the closeness of Allah).

And a few from the latter (generations).

(The close ones will be) on the coated thrones (with rubies, diamond and pearls, etc.).

Reclining on them, facing each other.

Circling around them (to serve) shall be eternal male youths.

Carrying vessels and jugs, and cups filled with wine (of Paradise) flowing before the eyes.

It will not cause headache, nor shall it affect their soberness (unlike the wine of this world).

And fruits that they may desire.

And the meat of birds that they may wish.

And large (gorgeous) eyed Hoors (i.e. maidens from Paradise).

Like pearls kept hidden.

As a reward for their deeds.

They will not hear any useless or sinful speech in it.

Yes, they will be saying this (to one another); ‘Salaam’ (and the other would reply) ‘Salaam!’

And those on the right; how (fortunate) are those on the right.

(They will be) amongst the berry trees without thorns.

And in clusters of bananas.

And in everlasting shade.

And amongst continuously flowing water.

And in (an) abundance of fruits.

Which neither come to an end nor are prohibited (for the dwellers of Paradise).

And on beddings raised high.

We have indeed created these women (i.e. the maidens of Paradise) with an excellent growth.

Hence made them virgins.

Loved by their husbands, displaying love for their husbands, being of the same age.

(Hoors are created) for the ones on the right side.

From the former generation, a (large) group.

And from the latter generation, a (large) group.

And those on the left; how (despicable) are those on the left.

In scorching hot wind and boiling hot water.

And in the shadow of burning smoke.

Which is neither cool nor of honour.

Indeed, they were indulging in luxury before this.

And were stubborn upon that great sin (of polytheism).

And they used to say, ‘What! When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?’

And our former forefathers as well?’

Say you (O Beloved), ‘Without doubt, all the former and the latter (will be raised).’

‘They will definitely be gathered on the appointed time of the known Day.’

Then indeed you, O misguided ones, O beliers.

You will indeed eat from the Zaqqoom tree (i.e. the extremely bitter thorny tree in Hell).

Then you will fill your bellies with it.

And on top of this, you will drink boiling water.

Then you will be drinking just like very thirsty camels drink.

This is their hospitality on the Day of justice.

We created you, so why do you not accept the truth?

Have you contemplated over that sperm which you discharge (in the womb of a woman)?

Is it you who create a human being out of it, or are We the Creator?

It is We who have decreed death amongst you, and We have not been outdone from it.

That (after causing you to die), We may replace the likes of you and make you into such forms of which you know not.

And indeed, you have known about the initial creation, then why do you not ponder?

So, have you considered that which you sow?

Is it you who cause crops to grow, or are We the Grower?

If We will, We can make it like dry trampled grass, so you would remain saying sorrowfully.

That ‘We have been ruined (in our wealth).’

‘Rather, we remained ill-fated.’

So, what do you say regarding that water which you drink?

Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We Who cause it to come down?

If We will, so We can make it salty, then why are you not grateful?

So, what do you say regarding that fire which you ignite?

Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who are the Creator of it?

We have made it (i.e. the fire) a reminder of Hell and as a benefit for travellers in the jungle.

So, O Beloved, glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.

So, I swear an oath by the places where the stars set.

And if you understand, so it is a great oath.

Indeed, this is the Respected Qur’aan.

(It is) in the Preserved Book.

No one may touch it except with Wudu (i.e. ritual ablution).

Sent down by the Lord of all the worlds.

Do you show laziness in this statement (i.e. in believing and practising of the Qur’aan)?

And you keep this your share; that you belie?

Then why should it not be, that when the soul (of a dying person) reaches the throat.

And you are watching at that moment.

And We are nearer to him than you are, but you see not.

So why was it not, if you are to be exempted from recompense.

That you bring it (i.e. the soul of the dying person) back, if you are truthful?

Then if the one dying is of those who are close (to Allah).

So (for such) is relief, and flowers, and gardens of peace.

And if (the dying person) is of those of the right side.

So, O Beloved, upon you be Salaam (i.e. Peace) from those on the right side.

And if he (i.e. the dying person) is from those who belie, the misguided.

Then his hospitality is boiling water.

And thrusting into the Blazing Fire.

This (state of all the three categories) is indeed a statement of certainty of the highest level.

Therefore, O Beloved, glorify the Name of your Great Lord.
